Breastfeeding and Work – Lets Make It Work!

This week (Aug 1st – 7th) is World Breastfeeding Week, marking the annual worldwide celebration of breastfeeding. This year’s theme is “Breastfeeding and Work – Lets Make It Work!”

World Breastfeeding Week is coordinated globally by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action wbw2015-logo-m who are calling for action in every country to support women to combine breastfeeding with work.

ALCI, the Association of Lactation Consultants in Ireland, supports this goal in the Irish context, both for mothers working within the home and mothers working outside the home. ALCI represents Irish International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) who strive to support mothers in their unique breastfeeding journey.

An IBCLC is a certified healthcare professional with special knowledge and experience assisting breastfeeding families. The IBCLC can work in a variety of environments from hospitals to private practice to community health settings. Many work with employers and businesses to help establish worksite lactation support programs. Mothers can also find a local IBCLC to help them with breastfeeding questions and concerns by visiting “Find a Lactation Consultant” here on the ALCI website.
